εἰς δὲ ἣν ἀφί̄κοντο κώμην μεγάλη τε ἦν καὶ βασίλειον εἶχε τῷ σατράπῃ

Het dorp waar ze aankwamen was groot en had een paleis voor de satraap.


The antecedent can be taken up into the relative clause. Consequently, its case is determined by its function in the relative clause, and no longer by its function in the main clause.

Syntactic behaviour

Usually the antecedent and the relative pronoun take the same case because of attraction. Which case is preferred is determined by its position in the following hierarchy: nominative An antecedent which is taken up into the relative clause invariably loses its article.
