Prepositions with the dative: time


ἐν τούτῳ δὲ τῷ καιρῷ αἱ μὲν κύνες προσκείσονται

‘At that moment the dogs will start attacking.’ (Xen. Hunt. 10.10)

The preposition ἐν with the dative signals a point in time.

Lexical usage

TBX - ἐν, ἀμφί (in, on);
- ἐπί (close to, by, on).


In poetry ἀμφί is also found; in Herodotus ἐπί is often used.

Example Sentences: 

καὶ κινδυνεύεις ἐν καιρῷ τινι οὐκ ἐγεῖραί με

And perhaps you're not waking me at the right time. [provisional translation] ֍

γέλως μὴ πολὺς ἔστω μηδὲ ἐπὶ πολλοῖς μηδὲ ἀνειμένος

Be sparing with your laughter, both in terms of frequency and of volume. ֍

μαλθακώδεα, τοῖσίδε χρὴ τοῖσι φαρμάκοισι χρῆσθαι ἐν χειμῶνι μᾶλλον ἢ ἐν θέρει

Emollients: these medicines should be used in the winter rather than in the summer.

σπεύδειν γὰρ ἐν καιρῷ χρεών.

It is necessary to hurry at the right moment.
