Prepositions with the accusative: degree/measure

τότε μὲν οὖν ἐπὶ πολὺ ἐδακρύομεν

‘Then we began to shed many tears.’ (Luc. VH 1.32)

The prepositions ἐπί, παρά and ὑπέρ with the accusative signal a degree or measure.

Translation tips

- ἐπί (up to … , as far as … );
- παρά (with a … margin);
- ὑπέρ (more than).

Example Sentences: 

ὑπὲρ ἥμισυ

more than half [provisional translation]

ὑπὲρ ἄνθρωπον

superhuman [provisional translation]

τὸ εὖ γίνεσθαι μὲν παρὰ μικρόν, οὐ μὴν μικρὸν εἶναι

That which is good can occur in small measure without being small.
