ἦσαν ἐν Ὀλύνθῳ τῶν ἐν τοῖς πράγμασιν τινὲς μὲν Φιλίππου καὶ πάνθ᾽ ὑπηρετοῦντες ἐκείνῳ, τινὲς δὲ τοῦ βελτίστου καὶ ὅπως μὴ δουλεύσουσιν οἱ πολῖται πράττοντες

In Olynthos waren er twee soorten mannen met kennis van zaken: die van Philippos, die hem in alles dienstbaar waren, en die van de goede zaak, die zich ervoor beijverden dat hun medeburgers niet in slavernij zouden leven.


The preposition ἐν with the dative signals a reference. Less frequent are ἀμφί (in poetry) and περί.

Lexical usage

καὶ γὰρ ὁρᾶν στυγνὸς ἦν καὶ τῇ φωνῇ τραχύς (Xen. Anab. 2.6.9) ‘for he was sombre in appearance and harsh of voice.’
