The dative signals an instrument or tool as a satellite.

Lexical usage

Usually the word in the dative is a concrete instrument, such as a tool, a weapon, a vehicle, a part of the body, etc. For linguistic purposes slaves and animals are regarded as a type of instrument.
Less frequently non-manipulable concrete and abstract nouns can be marked as instruments.
